How to generate fresh content ideas for your travel blog
When I am writing any blog content, I rely on two content categories that help me generate ideas. These hold true in almost any niche.
Helpful Content – as bloggers, or business owners with blogs as a marketing tool we want our blog posts to generate as much traffic for our website as possible. In fact, we are always looking ways to create better content that highlights our site on search engines. ‘Helpful content’ is a great way to achieve good SEO results, because often the content its self is evergreen (meaning it has a long shelf life, as opposed to topical or opinion pieces, which we will talk about later).
Helpful content answers a question your reader demographic and potential customers have about the topic you specialise in. So, let us say in this instance you are a travel blogger who writes about student travel during a gap year. Helpful content for your readers might include budgeting, planning and things not to miss in the best countries to visit. Another example could be family travel blogging. Here you could write about air travel with toddlers, or essentials to pack in your carry on for baby, or how to find the best travel insurance for your family.
The key to creating helpful content blog posts is to understand your reader, or customer and what they might ask when considering travel.
Topical, or Opinion Content – Topical or opinion content usually has a shorter shelf life, because it is a more socially focused topic. These types of blog posts can get huge impact in the first few days, or weeks of release, but are rarely revisited after this time. An example could be ‘how to plan your travel to the UK during Covid-19 lockdown easing’, or ‘my thoughts on how Covid19 will affect future travel for families’.
Why would you need a mix of helpful and topical content?
In truth my experience with blogging has shown that my readers like to see my journey and therefore my knowledge from these experiences. This gives gravitas to the content I create. This is also true for the businesses I blog for – people are looking to get to like you, know you and trust you. This is where you build a relationship that leads to opportunity with your readers, so opinion and helpfulness count for a great deal in your content.
